problem
Design students and early-career designers often struggle to receive timely, meaningful feedback while working inside their creative tools. Traditional critique systems depend heavily on mentors, peers, or scheduled reviews, which creates gaps between creation and reflection. During these gaps, designers experience uncertainty, creative blocks, and emotional frustration that directly affect decision-making and confidence. Existing AI tools primarily focus on technical outputs rather than the reflective and emotional aspects of the design process, leaving designers without guidance that understands context, intent, and feelings behind creative work. There was an opportunity to design an in-workflow system that supports designers not only with actionable feedback but also with reflection, learning progression, and emotional reassurance during the design journey.
solution
MindLoom is a reflective design mentor built as a plugin that integrates directly into the designer’s workflow, enabling contextual and conversational feedback without interrupting creation. The system gathers project context through progressive prompts, understands the user’s emotional state, and delivers feedback across multiple modes - technical, emotional, ethical, and exploratory - allowing designers to receive guidance tailored to their immediate needs. By combining structured critique with supportive dialogue, progress tracking, and reflective check-ins, MindLoom transforms feedback from a one-time evaluation into a continuous learning experience. The interface uses a warm, approachable design language and chat-based interaction model to reduce intimidation and encourage ongoing reflection, helping designers build confidence, improve decision-making, and develop long-term creative growth habits.
From its conception, MindLoom set out to rethink how designers receive feedback and grow through their creative process. Inspired by the often solitary nature of designing and the uncertainty that accompanies creative decision-making, the idea behind MindLoom was simple - bring mentorship, reflection, and guidance directly into the designer’s workspace. A space where designers could pause, think, and evolve while still creating, transforming feedback from an external event into a continuous, supportive experience.
